Our roots in biopharma stem back to the 1980's, when our founder, Alan Frazier, was one of the first executives at both Immunex and Affymax. We have worked with many of the leading entrepreneurs in the sector and have a strong reputation for building companies for long-term success.
This sector is attractive for investments given the significant unmet clinical needs, improving FDA environment and the demand from Big Pharma and Big Bio to fill their product pipelines. When reviewing opportunities in this sector, we look for one or more of the following characteristics:
- Product pipeline: We look for companies that are building their product portfolio through one of three ways: (1) paradigm-shifting therapeutic platforms that can be applied to developing new therapies and repositioning of existing drugs to new therapeutic areas/indications, (2) research and development teams that have significant insights into previously successful therapeutic areas, and (3) in-licensing from large pharmaceutical companies, research institutions or biotechnology companies.
- Advanced, proprietary lead program: We seek opportunities with a lead program that is either in the clinic or can rapidly achieve a value-building clinical milestone with our investment.
- World-class management team: The quality of a management team is vital to success. We often back world-class teams that approach us or we use our leadership position in the industry to attract top talent to our companies.
